Navigate your way around the complex Czech language, especially its 40-lettered alphabet and sometimes difficult pronunciation. Discover what you should expect to pay for your new home, what your tenant rights are and what documents are required for obtaining a work and spousal visa. Peppered throughout with useful phrases, terms and resources, CultureShock! Czech Republic is a must-have for anyone planning on adapting to life in the Czech Republic.

Tim Nollen hails from Washington, DC. After earning a degree in philosophy from Georgetown University, he moved to Prague in 1992, and spent the first two years there teaching English and studying music. He then worked at a Czech-American real estate firm for several years where he learnt some of the intricacies of cross-cultural communication through balancing the demands of an international clientele with the internal logic of the Czech market. At the same time, he became a regular contributor to The Prague Post travel section, and worked on travel guidebooks.

Tim has written extensively on destinations in Europe, particularly central and eastern Europe, for publications such as The Rough Guide, Lonely Planet and Thomas Cook.

Fully embracing the odd twists to his

career path, Tim returned to Georgetown for an MBA degree. He has since

kept himself busy as a financial analyst following publishing and

advertising stocks. After spending several years on Wall Street, his

past caught up with him and he relocated to London just to go through

culture shock all over again. He maintains strong ties with the Czech

Republic and visits frequently; he still aims to settle down one day in

a wood frame cottage somewhere in Bohemia.
